Short answer: Clogged gutters stop rainwater from draining safely away from your home. Instead, water can overflow near your foundation, siding, roofline, and walkways—leading to basement leaks, rotted trim, damaged landscaping, and icy spots in winter.

For homeowners in Northborough and throughout Central Massachusetts, gutter cleaning in late spring and late fall is one of the simplest ways to prevent expensive water damage.

Gutters have one job: catch the water coming off your roof and send it somewhere safe. When they are packed with leaves, pine needles, and shingle grit, that water goes wherever it wants.

Here’s what I see most often on gutter-cleaning jobs around Northborough, Shrewsbury, Westborough, and the rest of MetroWest.

1. Wet or Flooded Basements

Overflowing water pools right against your foundation walls and works its way in. A lot of “mystery” basement leaks I hear about start with a clogged gutter directly above them.

2. Foundation Cracks and Shifting

When soil around your home stays saturated, it expands and moves. Over time, that added pressure can contribute to foundation cracks, settling, and water intrusion.

3. Cracked Driveways and Walkways

Water that repeatedly soaks the ground under your driveway, walkway, or pavers can wash out the base underneath. You can end up with cracks, sinking sections, and uneven spots that become easy to trip on.

4. Washed-Out Landscaping

In a heavy rain, a clogged gutter turns into a waterfall. It blasts mulch out of your beds, exposes roots, and can drown plantings sitting underneath it.

5. Ice Buildup and Icy Walkways

Clogged gutters can make winter water problems worse. When water cannot drain, it may freeze in the gutter or spill onto steps, decks, and driveways.

Ice dams are often connected to heat escaping through the roof, but backed-up or poorly draining gutters can add to the problem and increase the risk of water ending up where it should not.

6. Mosquitoes and Pests

Standing water in a gutter is a mosquito nursery. Damp debris can also attract carpenter ants, rodents, and birds looking for a place to nest.

7. Hidden Water Damage Around Walls and Windows

Water running down your siding finds every gap. It can get behind siding, into window frames, and under flooring. You usually do not notice until you see stains, soft spots, peeling paint, or mold.

8. Rotted Fascia and Soffits

Wet debris is heavy, and it holds moisture against the wood boards your gutters are attached to. That wood can rot, crack, and open up another path for water into your home.

9. Moss, Algae, and Staining

Moss and algae need constant moisture, and a clogged gutter provides it. It can spread onto your roof edge and siding, look rough, and shorten the life of your shingles.

10. Roof Damage

Shingles that sit in backed-up water break down faster than the rest of the roof. Once water gets underneath, the roof deck can begin to rot, insulation can get wet, and eventually you may see water stains on ceilings or walls.

That is a much bigger bill than a gutter cleaning.

How to Prevent Gutter Problems

Get your gutters cleaned at least twice a year. In Central Massachusetts, that typically means:

Late spring, after pollen and seed pods
Late fall, after the leaves have dropped

Homes surrounded by oaks or pines may need a third cleaning.

While we are up there, we flush the downspouts and point out sagging sections, loose brackets, or fascia damage so you can catch problems early.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should gutters be cleaned in Massachusetts?

At least twice a year: once in late spring and again in late fall. Homes near a lot of trees may need cleaning three times a year.

Can clogged gutters contribute to ice dams?

They can. Clogged gutters trap water, which can freeze and create drainage problems around the roofline. Ice dams are also commonly connected to heat loss from the attic or roof, so it is important to address both drainage and insulation concerns.

How do I know if my gutters are clogged?

Look for water spilling over the edges during rain, plants growing out of the gutters, sagging sections, stains on your siding below the gutter line, or gutters pulling away from the house.

Do gutter guards mean I never need gutter cleaning?

No. Gutter guards can reduce buildup, but fine debris, pine needles, and shingle grit can still collect and need to be cleared periodically.

What towns does Zecco serve for gutter cleaning?

Zecco Cleaning serves Northborough, Westborough, Shrewsbury, Marlborough, Framingham, Sudbury, Wellesley, Weston, and surrounding Worcester County and MetroWest communities.
